Number 6 begins on as horrific a note as a story can start. Ida Moreno is raped and murdered at night in her apartment by a serial killer who has broken in through the window overlooking the fire escape. At the point of death her soul leaves her body and hovers invisible above the murderer as he completes ravaging her body. She finds that she can float above him and clumsily follow him back to his apartment, where she learns that she is the sixth victim of the predator known as the Pillow-Talk Killer. Reminiscent of the movie Ghost, Ida finds that she has to learn how to use and develop the ghostly powers available to her. Four ghosts who have chosen to stay behind in the world to help the souls like Ida's that have been suddenly and violently ripped from their bodies, rather than ascending into the afterlife of light and beauty that awaits them, take Ida's ghost under wing and tutor her on the use of her mystical powers. Between these training sessions in the basement of the great New York library where Ida worked while alive, she follows the Pillow-Talk Killer in his predatory ramblings and observes as he selects his next victim. She also visits and provides assistance to two NY detectives, Angela and Grim, who are assigned to crack the case and stop him from killing again. The story is by turns a suspenseful crime novel, a story of the afterlife, and an account of a warped and twisted serial killer and the pathetic life events that turned him into a psychopath. Humor and comaraderie is skillfully mingled with horror and suspense by this talented writer. Number 6 is highly recommended!Tags : Number 6 - Kindle edition by Sharon L. Higa. Number 6 edition by Sharon L Higa Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Number 6 is the first full length novel from Sharon Higa and it makes for quite the intriguing read, considering the first person narrative that primarily relays the story is that of a deceased character.
Yes, this is an enthralling paranormal thriller which charts the vengeful mission of Ida Moreno, formerly a head museum curator in New York City, or more correctly, follows the single-minded pursuit by her disembodied spirit as she seeks to right the injustice of her death, and in turn prevent further killings by the perpetrator.
In doing so Ida Moreno discovers, with her spirit leaving her body mid murder, and witnessing the horrors inflicted upon her and chain of events following, that she is a number in a series of murders. She is number 6 herself, the sixth victim of a serial killer with a bizarre collection of mementos of his nefarious deeds.
Number 6 is not for the faint of heart, it starts with the brutal assault and consequent killing of Ida Moreno and doesn’t let up from that moment, and with it being told from Ida’s point of view, her words hit hard and drag the reader right into her personal hell.
As she comes to terms with the fact that she is indeed dead, and hasn’t yet passed on to whatever lies beyond, but is remaining in spiritual limbo, the protagonist manages to discover she isn’t entirely helpless in this state. The ongoing investigation into her murder and the previous victims of a murderer dubbed The Pillow Talk Killer, by nicely balanced police detectives Angela Stokes and Abraham Grimm is one she can find ways to assist with, even as a ghostly presence, and there are some ingenious methods utilised to do so.
This is a great foray into paranormal thriller realms for a debut full length novel, it is edgy, compelling and rewarding, with a neatly constructed story and well developed characters who bounce smoothly off one another.
A little bit Matheson’s ‘What Dreams May Come’, a little bit Seobold’s ‘The Lovely Bones’, but ultimately all Sharon Higa, Number 6 is highly recommended for those with a penchant for paranormal thrillers that don’t mind being taken to some dark places.
I was extremely impressed with this novel. It is a unique and unexpected adventure.
It starts off with a horrific murder/rape, and then we meet the ghost of the murder victim as she follows her killer. She's faced with a terrible situation How can she stop her murderer from killing again?
We have the suspense of the police hunting down the serial killer, complex characters, a lovely writing style, and unexpected scenarios.
One of the things I loved the most about this book is it shows that the human condition remains with a person no matter their situation (in this case, the person is no longer a member of the living world). The main character, Ida, grows as a person during this time. Something you wouldn't expect to happen to someone after they are murdered or even in horror novel in general. Also, we see her develop social bonds with other ghosts who have continued on with their existence, choosing to stay behind and help other ghosts adjust. All of these characters are from different times and backgrounds, yet they have created their own social order in their unusual situation. It's a fascinating scenario.
Overall, I give this book high praise. It has real depth as well as being a suspenseful read.
l really liked this book. Sharon told this very well. I got to where I was. hoping to see or feel someone switch .me also. I give this 4 stars.
Good book my husband loves it and he loves to read all the time thank you Sharon L. Higa for writing a good book
I loved the fact that the author really made you feel what she felt...and I thought the concept was great with her being in a type of 'limbo' until she completed what was necessary for her to move on... And all of the other characters were so likable ... I would definitely read other books by this author...
It is a great book! My husband and I enjoyed reading it I can not wait till the next one comes out. My husband found the book to be intriguing, and suspensful. He especially enjoys the sense of the supernatural, which he has come to expect from the author.
