Taylor Smart has a pretty good life despite her mean teachers and snooty classmates. Of course, that is before she is kidnapped by the Fair Folk and whisked into a world she never dreamed could be real.

Apparently, the cuddly versions of those old faery tales don’t tell the whole story, and middle school never prepared Taylor for a world filled with bogeymen, trolls, dwarves, and spriggans. But that's what she finds in the faery realm its inhabitants call the Wonder.

Taylor is thrown into a quest to discover her true identity guided by Danny Underhill, her erstwhile kidnapper. But will the shapeshifting trickster’s dark secrets spell her doom? And how will Taylor decide which world, fae or human, is truly her own?

Children of Pride Into the Wonder Book 1 eBook Darrell J Pursiful

This is a welcome addition to the young adult fantasy literature genre! Children of Pride introduces the reader to a well-researched and carefully crafted alternate universe that incorporates snippets of fantasy lore from a wide variety of sources. The author blends them seamlessly to create a world of wonder and intrigue, danger and excitement, where the characters live out experiences that carry them through a vast range of emotions. The reader gets to know the characters quickly without having to be told implicitly every detail about their personality. One becomes attached to the protagonists right away, and cares about what happens to them, anticipating each turn of the page. Unlike the one-dimensional characters in many books for young readers, the characters in Children of Pride are complex and multi-faceted. Throughout the story's interesting plot twists and turns, the characters face situations that test and ultimately reveal the direction of their moral compass. The story accomplishes the difficult task of being accessible to the younger readers of this genre, while at the same time offering them intellectual challenges that lead to learning and growth. This reader is already looking forward to the next installment of the saga!

Children of Pride Into the Wonder Book 1 eBook Darrell J Pursiful Reviews

First, a bit of my bona fides <smile>. I hold a Master's degree in music, have raised 2 boys to young adulthood, and have been reading fantasy since I was a child. Huge fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden series, and have enjoyed Kim Harrison's Hollows series, along with several other bits of current "urban fantasy." Also, I probably should mention that I've known Darrell for many years.

I think the comparison to Dresden is most apt for this book. Not only because they both deal with the sidhe, and in similar ways, but the genre is dealt with similarly - the "mundane" world and the hidden, larger world of the paranormal. But the mundane world is drawn realistically, which makes the paranormal world seem that much more realistic. I must admit to a bit of frisson whenever places are mentioned that I know, since I also live in Middle Georgia. Darrell also writes his characters in such a way that you recognize them immediately - their emotions and reactions ring true.

Taylor and Danny find themselves confronting not only the "traditional" sidhe that most fantasy readers will be familiar with, but also several other groups and races. The story is compelling, and you get a real affection for these characters quickly, caring about what happens to them, and enjoying the twists and turns alongside them. And there are some deliciously unexpected moments, and a couple of triumphant beats when someone gets the best of a bad situation.

There are a couple of elements that might be a little scary to younger children, so I'd definitely pass on this one for anyone younger than about 13 or so, but don't think this is only for the young set - I believe that most adult readers of fantasy would also enjoy this one. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Darrell; I have a feeling he's got a few more tales to tell....
Good read and great Fae lore!
I love that this is a fantasy tale that originates in the South and there is no stereotyping! The characters and setting are beautifully written and I can't wait to see where the story goes. Thank you, Darrell Pursiful.
I enjoyed the lighthearted tone of "Children of Pride." It is a great read for children to teens, especially junior high age. The up-to-date descriptions of fantasy characters like elves, fairies and dwarves were a welcome change from some more ponderous fantasy works. I find myself wondering if Taylor and her friends will reappear in a second tale. Enjoyable!
"I enjoyed this book. While it contained some familiar fairytale/fantasy creatures and ideas, the book was original and unique. The characters were well developed and I liked them more and more as the book went on. I loved how quickly I got to know the characters and I was attached to them right away! I liked the writing style and l liked the way the scary and intense parts were balanced with the funny parts. I did find that it could be a little tedious and drawn-out at times, but overall it was a good book. I would recommend it to children ages 11 to 13."
I picked up this book because I've had the good pleasure to work with Darrell before on some projects. I've followed his writing in a variety of places online and have always found his balance of exposition and description to be well maintained and developed. When I heard this book was forthcoming, I figured I'd pick up a copy and give it a try. I've read many of the major entries in YA fiction and have enjoyed many of them but find that much second-tier YA fiction is regrettably derivative.

However, this book is a shockingly good first offering in the world YA fiction. I could not possibly recommend it more highly if you're looking for intelligent, witty, and carefully crafted storytelling in the YA world. It does not fall into the trap of repetition and derivative adaptation as so many books in the genre do, but rather is bold enough to carefully undermine the tropes so common to the genre.

This work represents a careful balance between accessibility and fantasy that is typically only seen in works by more heavily published authors. By the time I had finished the first third of the book, I knew that I'd want to read any sequels that Darrell may publish. It's evident that Darrell knows his "world" well and that there are beautiful secrets hiding in plain view just waiting to be discovered.

Without reservation, I recommend this book. I read it on and at this absurdly low price, you'd be foolish not to give it a shot and see if it is, as I have suggested to others, a refreshing alternative to formulaic YA fiction.
