This sequel to "Time and Tide" is absolutely WONDERFUL! I urge anyone reading this review to read "Time and Tide" first to get the full benefit regarding the lives of three generations from the beginning of the 20th century through two world wars. The two books really belong together. While the sequel does revolve mainly around the 3rd generation grandson August, there is much to tie all three generations together. Please do yourself and favor and enjoy it all! You will not be disappointed!Product details

I would've liked to see more romance and the character of Fredo wasn't as developed as I would've liked. However, it was very enjoyable to revisit the characters Will & Teddy & learn what else happened to their growing family.
Monsters and Men rounded out this story in a fantastic way. I was OK with "Time and Tide," dismayed by the spineless of Will's character, but that all is forgiven in this sequel. The story of Will and Teddy are still a huge part of this story surrounding their grandson, August. I cried almost nonstop from about the 50% point on and the trials August must face are painful to endure, but the story is rich with description and full of love in its many forms. Teddy is fleshed out more in this story for which I am grateful, and we understand more about Noah.
A note to the author, though - the phrase "puff of air" was used too many times. I wasn't able to get a count, but I suspect it was over 15 times. I'm not sure exactly what releasing a "puff of air" represents or indicates. Is it like a huff? A chuckle? Because I didn't understand the meaning behind it, I was acutely aware and irritated each time I saw it.
But thank you for this beautiful story and the thorough cleansing it gave my tear ducts and emotions. I look forward to reading more of your works.

A great sequel/companion novel to Tides. I actually read this one prior to Tides, but recently read them back to back, and it does make this story much richer.
What an excellent, sensitive coming-of-age and love story set between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s. The author draws interesting, multi-layered characters - not only the protagonist, but his family - and the between-war and WWII settings are fascinatingly done. August goes through a great deal of trauma throughout his young life, but his triumphal spirit is inspirational. I found the whole story extremely engaging and very emotionally charged; highly recommend.
Every word in this book felt like a precious gift from the author. Such a powerful story, told in an elegant, quiet way. Not one word was wasted and the character development was the best I've ever read. This is a true mind movie. Think it's going to be in my head for a long while. There is a lot of romance on varying levels between different characters and the tenderness and fragility makes me ache. Not a lot of sex and it's not needed to tell this story.
The first book in the duo, Time and Tide, should be read first to get the full story and it's so worth it. Auto buy author for me now.
