The Family Next Door A Novel Sally Hepworth 9781250120892 Books Reviews

I read a review of this book in Harpers Bazaar, so I thought I would give it a try. It is just what the article described it as a good beach read for the summer. Really good character development, and I found myself 'pulling for' many of the characters and hoping for good outcomes with their relationship struggles. I read it in a couple of days, and for me, that typically means it was a good book!
Um, what I wanted was a psychological thriller, which is what I was promised, but what I got was sort of like a gossipy tale of people I didn't care about. I don't blame the author for this. I am just not into neighborhood drama as a plot. This is a well written book and for probably a woman in her thirties, looking for a little drama, it would be considered good. Just not good for me.
Another wonderful read by Sally Hepworth. Imperfect characters, flawed, yet forgivable.
Sort of an Australian Desperate Housewives meets Liane Moriarty. Light entertainment at best, but I did keep reading to find out how each storyline was resolved.
It's cheap and if you want a summer beach read then OK, otherwise a waste of time. Definitely women in the 50's were far more down to earth than these characters. However, saying that I am English and of course we lived in totally different circumstances as most English women had been raising their children alone during the war years. The 50's and early 60's were still difficult years whereas in this novel the characters seem pampered to say the least.

SPOIULER
The story line was OK, but those that have lost a child during child birth would have felt more compassion for the Mother,
Good plot and language! But I just get so fed up by constantly jogging, neurotic and undereating women constantly bursting out "I'm sorry", "It's all my fault", "I'm a bad mom", and the like. And the question whether you can love a child which is not yours biologically is plain silly to me.
I was seeking a new book to read when after a few days of searching, this was the first book I came across that interested me. I love a good domestic drama that’s not also considered to be a psychological thriller. This book sounded like it fit. I found that the very beginning of the book lured me in, and made me want to know more. It kept me interested. However, from approximately 10% through 40% of the way through, I thought it kind of dragged. It was a bit confusing to follow, and didn’t really hold my interest as much. I actually almost abandoned this book to start another book I had since purchased. When that happens, I find that more often than not I don’t end up returning to finish the abandoned book- and since this was a pretty expensive book, I really wanted to try my best to get through it. I’m glad I did, because eventually, I became hooked. I needed to find out what was going on & what would happen. Nearer to the end, the chapters ended in little cliffhangers. However, even though the next chapter that followed may have focused on someone else, it was still not disappointing because I still was just as interested in that storyline. Once the book “got going”, I thought that all of the neighbor’s stories were interesting. The title of the book, “The Family Next Door”, accurately describes the book perfectly. Each family was the “family next door” to someone else, and you just never really know what’s going on in other people’s lives- and every family has their issues. It wasn’t the kind of book that’ll stay with me for days after finishing it, nor one I’d probably read again, but It was good, and I would recommend it to those who like domestic dramas.
